MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Asked whether the government thought of applying Act 115 of the country’s Constitution, which provides for the suspension of autonomy, to Catalonia, Catala said he did not "rule it out" as quoted by the EFE news agency.
On November 9, the Parliament of Catalonia passed a resolution to begin the process of seceding from Spain. The initiative was backed by 72 votes in the 135-seat parliament.
Catalonia has long sought independence from Spain, accusing Madrid of constraining its economic and cultural autonomy.
Madrid has repeatedly said that Catalonia’s separation from Spain is against the country’s Constitution.
