On Wednesday, the Czech Foreign Ministry refused to extend Rossiya Segodnya freelance correspondent Alexander Kuranov’s press pass, citing a classified security department decision as grounds for the move.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency journalist who was denied permission to extend his press accreditation in the Czech Republic should have the right to appeal the decision, a spokesman for the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic said Thursday.

"Should there be a case where an accreditation has been revoked or refused, that should be accompanied by the right on the part of the applicant to dispute the reasons for the refusal," Gunnar Vrang said in a written answer to RIA Novosti's request for comment on the situation.

Vrang added that although the OSCE could not comment on the specific case at this point in time, "the Representative’s general standpoint on accreditation is that it cannot be viewed as a work permit, and the lack thereof should not deprive members of the media the right to do their work."

Kuranov has been working in the Czech Republic since the 1980s. In June 2014, he became a freelance correspondent for Rossiya Segodnya.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday that the refusal to extend Kuranov's press credentials showed that censorship exists in the Czech Republic.
