WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The executive order, signed by President George W. Bush, blocked property of certain Liberian politicians and prohibited import of certain goods from the country.
"The President [Obama] has terminated the national emergency declared with respect to Liberia pursuant to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act in Executive Order 13348 of July 22, 2004 and lifted the economic sanctions imposed pursuant to that Order," Price said.
The White House noted, however, that “much remains to be done” ahead of the next major milestones for Liberia, including July 2016 transfer of security responsibility from the UN Mission in Liberia, and upcoming 2017 presidential elections.
The United Nations Mission in Liberia was established by Security Council in September 2003, following a civil war, which lasted for over a decade and claimed the lives of almost 150,000 people.
