Iraqi military helicopters have provided support and evacuated wounded Kurdish Pershmerga fighters during the fight to reclaim the strategic northern Iraqi city of Sinjar from ISIL, Operation Inherent Resolve spokesperson Colonel Steven Warren stated on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier on Friday, Kurdistan Region Security Council announced that Kurdish Peshmerga forces reclaimed Sinjar, which had been captured by ISIL for over a year.

"It was actually Iraqi Security Forces who provided medevac support for the Kurds during this operation," Warren told.

Warren explained that it would take up to two weeks to completely clear the city, adding that Peshmerga casualties in the fight were "minuscule" compared to the number of killed ISIL terrorists.

Up to 2,000 civilians members of the Yazidi religious community in Nineveh Province were killed by ISIL terrorists after they conquered Sinjar in August 2014.
