WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated on Thursday that the United States has yet to respond to Russia's call to intervene in the case, given that the health of the Russian pilot is worsening.
"Certainly, we will respond to Foreign Minister Lavrov’s concerns," Toner responded to question on how the United States is handling Moscow’s request.
In early 2014, Yaroshenko reported severe heart pain. The US authorities granted Yaroshenko a medical examination only after his lawyer and Russian diplomats made numerous requests for one.
"He is a foreigner held in the US justice system, but we will continue to provide whatever consular access is needed," Toner added.
Yaroshenko was detained in Liberia in 2010 after a joint undercover operation between Liberian and US intelligence agencies. He was then transferred to the United States, where he was charged with plotting to smuggle cocaine into the United States.
