ANTALYA (Sputnik) — There is a number of sensitive and controversial issues regarding the Sino-Japanese relations, including the issue of Taiwan status, Beijing's concerns about Japanese-US security cooperation, and the long-standing controversy of war reparations, which hundreds of Chinese families have been seeking from Japan over the 1937-1945 Sino-Japanese War.
"Prime Minister said that the Japan-China relations as a whole have improved, this month we are to have a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. Both of them [the Leaders of China and Japan] agreed that this improvement in relations should be based on the so-called mutually beneficial relationship, based on common strategic interests," Kawamura said at a press conference at the G20 Summit in Turkey.
Relations between China and Japan have been strained by a dispute over uninhabited islands in the East China Sea, with each party is laying claims on. The Japanese, who have claimed the islands since the 19th century, call them the Senkaku Islands, the name mostly recognized globally, while in China they are known as the Diaoyu Islands.
Earlier this month, a high-level summit between Japan, South Korea and China was held in Seoul for the first in three years.
