"It is a sort of alliance, the trade agreement which is in the right direction," Bachelet said at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit when asked why Chile joined the TPP.
The Chilean leader suggested that the deal makes possible higher standards of wealth, allowing Santiago to "be part of countries that have higher standards and give opportunities."
"Thirdly, it allows us to improve the trade agreements that we already have," Bachelet added.
Opponents point out that the TPP has been negotiated in extremely high secrecy and will have negative implications for human rights, national sovereignty, employment and the environment. The deal’s supporters claim it will spur global economic growth, shareholder profit, and create jobs.
