“Our demand is that Congress not pass the TPP and that we restart trade negotiations in a way that is restricted to trade – not corporate power grabs — and that raises standards to protect workers, human rights, and the environment for all people around the world,” Flowers said on Monday.
On November 14-18, Popular Resistance and their project Flush the TPP are protesting the controversial trade deal in Washington, DC.
“We are building resistance in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world to stop neo-liberal treaties,” Flowers said.
She added that more than 100 people participated in the rally on Monday and said their numbers would continue to grow.
On October 5, the TPP negotiating countries reached an agreement on the wording and subject matter of the deal. The agreement would deregulate trade among the United States and 11 partner countries, which together make up 40 percent of the world economy.
The final text of the TPP agreement was released to the public two weeks ago after it was signed in October by the United States, Brunei, Chile, New Zealand, Singapore, Australia, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and Vietnam.
