"Riders will likely notice an increased police presence throughout the transit system," the release said on Monday. "The additional patrols…will continue for an unspecified period of time."
The metro police will also conduct security sweeps with more than 20 teams equipped with dogs in and around metro stations.
"MTPD has expanded random explosives screening at station entrances. Any bag or package carried onto the system may be subject to screening by MTPD officers," the police said.
Local and federal law enforcement in cooperation with MTPD have also implemented "several other countermeasures that are not visible to the traveling public," the release added.
Earlier on Monday, an active shooter situation in downtown Washington, DC caused closure of several blocks in a busy district near the White House. The shooter was taken into custody, no injuries were reported.
