The initial phase of the Russian military operation in Syria has helped stabilize the tactical situation there and Moscow is now preparing a second stage to support the Syrian Army’s ongoing offensive against the forces of the Islamic State terrorists group, Le Monde wrote, citing a representative of the French intelligence community.
Amid the obvious success of Russia’s aerial campaign in Syria, France may dispatch commando units to the troubled Arab country, just like the Americans did before.
“All options are possible at this stage,” the newspaper quoted its source at the defense ministry as saying.
French foreign minister Laurent Fabius earlier said that Paris rejected the idea of having coalition boots on the ground in Syria arguing that the effect of such action would be “totally counterproductive.”
