WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Syrian opposition is selecting its representatives for the upcoming peace talks aimed at a political transition in Syria, US Secretary of State John Kerry told the press.
"We are now at a stage where the opposition is coming together to choose those people who will negotiate for it," Kerry said on Thursday after briefing the US Senate Intelligence Committee.
Members of the international community have convened a series of meetings under United Nations auspices in recent months aimed at a political resolution of the Syrian crisis.
"At that point, the United Nations is prepared to convene the parties in Geneva and prepare the process of creating this transitional process for Syria itself," Kerry stated.
At the conclusion of the November 14 Vienna talks, the parties agreed to a timeline for a political transition in Syria with May 2017 as the intended date for new elections.
