MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The participation of the United Kingdom in military operations in the Middle East has jeopardized the national security of the country, Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said Saturday.
"For the past 14 years, Britain has been at the centre of a succession of disastrous wars that have brought devastation to large parts of the wider Middle East. They have increased, not diminished, the threats to our own national security in the process," Corbyn said in a speech, as quoted by The Independent newspaper.
The Labour leader called for a regional, as well as a negotiated settlement in Syria, not be seen as "external intervention."
Britain was part of a US-led coalition that invaded Iraq in 2003, without a UN mandate, after falsely accusing former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein of possessing weapons of mass destruction.
London also participated in the US-led NATO mission in Afghanistan which ended in December 2014.
