WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Sunday, Macri won a run-off presidential election by receiving 51.5 percent of popular vote, despite losing the first round of the elections to former Vice President Daniel Scioli.
“The United States and Argentina are long-standing partners, and we look forward to working closely with President-designate Mauricio Macri and his government,” Kerry said.
Macri, who is a prominent opposition member and mayor of Buenos Aires won the vote putting an end to the 12-year rule of the Peronist party. He will replace Christina Kirchner who ruled the country since 2007.
