“The refugee crisis is a consequence of the President's [Obama’s] failed policy in the Middle East,” Ryan wrote in an op-ed for CNN. “It is a symptom of the disease.”
Ryan argued that the solution to the crisis lies in a plan to defeat the Islamic State terrorists operating in Iraq, Syria and regions of northern Africa.
“Until we are willing to truly confront this terrorist threat wherever it is, we cannot be truly safe,” Ryan added.
The House speaker noted that the terrorist problem “will not go away anytime soon.”
Europe has been struggling with a major migrant crisis as hundreds of thousands of refugees flee war-torn regions of the Middle East and North Africa.
On Thursday, the US House of Representative overwhelming passed a bill to block the Obama administration from resettling some 10,000 Syrian refugees to the United States in 2016.
