Former president of the world football governing body Joseph Blatter could be banned for life from all football activities, according to German media.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The world football governing body FIFA’s ethics committee recommends banning its president Joseph Blatter for life, German media reported Tuesday.

"If Blatter’s offenses are seen as corrupt, he should be banned for life from all football activities," the Die Welt daily cited FIFA Ethics Committee chairman Hans-Joachim Eckert as saying.

FIFA Ethics Committee Opens Proceedings Against Blatter, Platini
Eckert imposed a 90-day ban on Blatter and Vice President Michel Platini, who also serves as president of the European football governing body UEFA, on October 8.

The FIFA Ethics Committee opened formal adjudicatory proceedings against Blatter and Platini on Monday. Over the weekend, it had requested sanctions imposed against both officials.

Platini’s lawyer told French media on Tuesday that Platini faces a similar lifetime ban for allegedly receiving $2 million from Blatter in 2011, which he classified as "clearly excessive." Platini maintains that the payment was made as part of a legally signed contract.
