Proposed EU Energy Union Prioritizes Russian Gas Transit Via Ukraine
13:45 GMT 24.11.2015 (Updated: 11:50 GMT 09.02.2023) European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic said that maintaining the transit of Russian natural gas through Ukraine is in the interest of Russia, EU, and Ukraine.
BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – Maintaining the transit of Russian natural gas through Ukraine is a priority for the proposed European Energy Union, European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic said Tuesday.
"The EU believes it is in the interest of all parties that Ukraine remains an important transit country," Sefcovic told European lawmakers in a speech on the state of the energy union.

Energy experts estimate that around half of all Russian natural gas produced annually, or 80 billion cubic meters, is delivered to Europe through Ukraine.
European Council President Donald Tusk first proposed the creation of an EU-wide energy union in April 2014. The union aims to reduce Europe's dependence on Russian gas supplies and broaden energy cooperation among EU member states.
The Council approved the creation of the European Energy Union in March 2015.
