Both Moscow and Tehran are acting in a multi-polar world, rather than a uni-polar system of Western hegemony, according to Ghoncheh Tazmini, a political scientist at the London Middle East Institute.

Eurasian Economic Union to Consider Free Trade Zone With Iran - Putin
In an interview with Sputnik, Ghoncheh Tazmini, a political scientist and an Associate Member of the Centre for Iranian Studies at the London Middle East Institute, said that Russia and Iran are developing relations in a multi-polar world, rather than a uni-polar world order based on Western hegemony in the region.

The interview came as Russian President Vladimir Putin sat down for talks with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani in the framework of Putin's current visit to Tehran.

Tazmini has expressed hope that the two countries would continue to boost ties in many sectors of mutual interest.

"Most importantly, there would be coordination on an array of strategic issues, including those related to the aerospace field and the Syrian conflict," she said.

Separately, Tazmini focused on Tehran's role in combating the Islamic State.

"Iran has been at war with ISIL and jihadist forces for many years," she said, adding that Tehran "is already fighting Islamic State militants on the ground."

Tazmini stressed that that other countries should also contribute to destroying ISIL and that  the issue should be resolved on a global level.
