MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US State Secretary John Kerry discussed on Wednesday in a phone call the downing of a Russian warplane over Syria by the Turkish air force, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"The diplomats discussed the situation around the unprovoked attack by the Turkish air force on a Russian tactical bomber, which was flying a combat mission against terrorist targets in Syria," the ministry said in a statement.
The US Secretary of State also added that Turkey and Russia need to engage in a dialogue after the Russian Su-24 incident, the US Department of State said in a release on Wednesday.
"Minister [Lavrov] pointed out at a blatant violation of the Russia-US memorandum on flight safety during combat missions over Syria, in which the United States has sworn responsibility for implementation of relevant rules by all participants of the US-led coalition, including Turkey," the statement said.
