BUCHAREST (Sputnik) — The United States plans to have a land-based Aegis ballistic missile defense system in Romania by the end of 2015.
"The deployment of US missile defense systems on the Romanian territory is the choice of the Romanian political leadership, and we respect it," Naryshkin told reporters.
According to Naryshkin, this choice could not completely reflect the choice of the Romanian people.
He added that the Russian authorities should make their choice to provide security of their country and people under the circumstances.
Moscow has repeatedly opposed US proliferation of missile defense systems near its border, claiming it represents a threat to Russia’s strategic nuclear deterrent. US and NATO officials say that the system is not aimed at countering a Russian threat.
