MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Wednesday, US forces Commander in Afghanistan Gen. John Campbell told reporters that the Pentagon concluded the attack on the MSF medical facility in Kunduz last month was primarily caused by human error.
"I think the US military should ask MSF what information would help accomplish an independent investigation and swiftly make that information available, including any tapes of conversations relevant to the decisions that took place on the morning of October 3rd, and also during the subsequent attack when a US tank rolled into the hollowed out shell of the MSF hospital," Kelly said.
A US AC-130 gunship aircraft shot 30mm cannon shells for 30 minutes into the MSF hospital in Kunduz, killing at least 22 medical staff and patients. Another 24 people are still missing and are presumed dead.
"US legislators and the Obama administration should demand from the Pentagon a workable plan to prevent future US attacks against civilian populations," Kelly suggested.
According to an MSF assessment released shortly after the attack, the US aircraft also gunned down patients and medical staff as they were fleeing the hospital.
On Wednesday, Congressmen Mac Thornberry and Adam Smith said in a joint statement it was clear the Kunduz tragedy was caused by process failures on multiple levels.
