MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Tahir Elci, bar association president in Turkey’s southeastern Diyarbakir province, was Saturday in a shooting that broke out when he was making a press statement. Two police officers were also shot.
"One possibility is that after this terror attack, the assailants assassinated Mr Elci. A second possibility is that… Elci got caught in the crossfire," Davutoglu said later in the day, as quoted by the BBC, promising to hold a "transparent" investigation into the incident.
Elci was arrested by Turkish authorities in October after he said that the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) was not a terrorist organization, as claimed by Ankara.
Violence in Turkey escalated in July, when the Turkish government launched a military campaign against PKK.
