A study recently released by the New America Foundation claims that right-wing extremists are the biggest terrorist threat to the United States.
The foundation says 19 out of the 26 attacks were carried out by “non-Muslims.”
The study referred to recent attacks such as the 2012 shooting deaths of six people outside the Sikh temple in Wisconsin. That attack was carried out by a man associated with neo-Nazi ideology. Other examples included the married couple who walked into a Las Vegas pizzeria and shot two police officers before leaving a swastika on one of the bodies and murdering a third victim at a Wal-Mart parking lot. It also highlighted the murders of nine people at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, at the hands of a man driven by racist sentiment.
In its narrow scope, the New America Foundation defined terrorism as “ideological violence.” Thus, mass shootings such as the one that occurred at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, were not investigated.
