MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Chief of Russia's General Staff Valery Gerasimov and Chairman of the United States' Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford held a phone talk, discussing the fight against the Islamic State (IS, also known as Daesh) in Syria, Russia's Defense Ministry said Monday.
"Matters regarding the actions of Russia and the US-led international coalition to combat the terrorist group IS in Syria were discussed," the ministry's press service said in a statement.
The group is regarded a terrorist organization by both countries.
According to the Russian ministry, the phone talk was initiated by the United States, and the sides agreed to continue bilateral contacts.
