MOSCOW (Sputnik) — South Korean President Park Geun-hye asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to play an active role in reviving the nuclear talks with North Korea, local media reported.
According to the Yonhap news agency’s Monday report, Park also called on Putin, at the sidelines of the UN climate conference in Paris, to support Seoul’s efforts in peaceful reunification of the Korean peninsula.
The negotiations stalled in 2009 after North Korea refused to take part in further discussions; it had declared itself a nuclear power in 2005 and conducted nuclear tests in 2006, 2009 and 2013.
Park has repeatedly called for the resumption of the six-party talks. South Korean ambassador to Russia Park Ro-byug told Sputnik earlier this month that Moscow and Seoul continued cooperation on the challenging issue of Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.
