BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – Belgian police officers are concerned for their safety when patrolling the Brussels suburb of Molenbeek, according to a Monday report by Committee P, the body conducting external oversight over the country's police.
"Police do not have contact with the population, know absolutely nothing about a number of blocks, and don't dare to patrol them," the report said, as quoted by the Belgian De Tijd newspaper.
Belgium remains on high terror alert since the November 13 terrorist attacks in the French capital. Molenbeek is of particular concern for law enforcement officers, as a number of the perpetrators of the Paris attacks, including planner Abdelhamid Abaaoud and fugitive Salah Abdeslam, were residents of the ethnically-diverse community.
A series of coordinated attacks in the French capital killed 130 people and injured more than 360.
