The German military operation in Syria, approved by contry's government, will consist of 1,200 troops, according to local media.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The German government on Tuesday approved operations by its troops against Islamic State (ISIL, or Daesh in the Arab world) in Syria, media reported.

The mission will involve up to 1,200 German troops, according to the DPA news agency.

The German Armed Forces plan to engage several Tornado reconnaissance combat aircraft and a frigate to support the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle in the Mediterranean Sea, the news outlet said.

An aerial refueling aircraft, satellite reconnaissance and headquarters staff will support the mission.

On November 25, German Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged to support France’s anti-IS campaign following the deadly Paris attacks that claimed the lives of 130 people earlier that month.

On Monday, German media revealed a 16-page government report that set out the scope and cost of a German involvement in fighting IS in Syria and Iraq as part of a wider US-led international operation. The mission will reportedly cost about $141.7 million, with its end set for December 31, 2016.
