ANKARA (Sputnik) — Turkey’s Botas gas corporation and the National Oil Company of Qatar on Wednesday signed a preliminary memorandum of understanding for the supply of gas to Turkey on a long-term basis, Turkish media reported.
According to the Anadolu news agency, the agreement was signed during the visit of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan to Qatar. Previously, gas deliveries between the two countries were based on short-term agreements.
The parties have started to prepare the text of the main contract, which will contain the amount of gas and the timing of deliveries, the media reported. The main contract is expected to be signed in the near future, according to the news outlet.
In 2014, Turkey imported 47.6 billion cubic meters of gas. Russia was the main supplier of gas to Turkey in 2014, delivering around 60 percent, or some 27.4 billion cubic meters of gas, to the country.
Iran, Azerbaijan, Algeria and Nigeria also supply gas to Turkey.
