Germany feels deeply obliged to provide humanitarian aid to refugees arriving in Europe, German Ambassador in Russia said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Germany feels deeply obliged to provide humanitarian aid to refugees arriving in Europe and must not build border fences, German Ambassador in Russia Ruediger von Fritsch said Wednesday.

"We feel a deep humanitarian debt and obligation to the [refugees]. We must help these people, who have gone such a terrible way to get to Europe," Fritsch said at a conference on international migration.

Winter Is Coming, Along With More Refugees... to Germany
The diplomat explained that it was a "moral obligation" to the refugees, adding that, in this context, Germany could not build "any barriers or borders."

The European Union is struggling to manage a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people leaving conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa for Europe.

Germany expects over a million refugees during the course of 2015, according to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, with more than 950,000 refugees reportedly registered in the country since the beginning of this year.
