"This decision [on quota system] was adopted in breach of European law. Quotas are unfeasible. Practice shows that quotas are a fiasco," Fico said after a cabinet meeting, as quoted by the Tyden news website.
According to the Slovak government, the EU plan violates the right of members' state national parliaments to participate in the decision-making process.
In late September, EU justice and interior ministers approved the European Commission-proposed plan on the relocation of 120,000 refugees within the bloc, while Slovakia, Romania, Hungary and the Czech Republic voted against the motion and Finland abstained.
In November, Hungarian Defense Minister Laszlo Trocsanyi announced that the country's plans to sue the European Union in December over the quota system, adding that he expected other EU member states to follow the suit by lodging their own legal challenges.
