MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Corbyn stressed that the Su-24 downing over Syria may lead to serious consequences in the region:
"There [is yet no] any serious evidence that [the UN resolution] is being used to coordinate international military or diplomatic strategy in Syria. That’s despite the clear risk of potentially disastrous incidents such as the shooting down of a Russian military aircraft by Turkish forces leading to a dangerous escalation," he said, speaking during a one-day debate in the House of Commons ahead of a vote on starting UK airstrikes in Syria.
Extending UK airstrikes against the Islamic State (IS or Daesh in Arab World) to Syria will also not yield any significant results, UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said Wednesday.
"The claim that superior British missiles will make the difference is hard to credit when the US and other states are struggling to find suitable targets. In other words, extending UK bombing is highly unlikely to work," Corbyn said.
According to him, a number of states have been bombing terrorist positions in Iraq for more than a year without achieving any significant reduction in the terrorists' ranks.
Moscow has been conducting pinpoint airstrikes on terrorist positions, particularly those of Islamic State, in Syria at President Bashar Assad's request since September 30.
Both the Russian General Staff and the Syrian Air Defense Command have confirmed that the Su-24 never crossed into Turkish airspace and was illegally downed on Syrian territory
In the wake of the incident, Russia introduced a set of economic measures against Turkey, while Ankara has refused to apologize for the move.
