Swiss Police Make New Arrests in FIFA Corruption Scandal
MOSCOW (Sputnik) Earlier in the day, the arrests of some 12 people at the request of the United States on charges of racketeering, money laundering and fraud, were reported by The New York Times.

"The high-ranking FIFA officials are alleged to have taken the money in return for selling marketing rights in connection with football tournaments in Latin America, as well as World Cup qualifying matches," the FOJ said, referencing the US Attorney office investigation.

According to the FOJ, the arrested officials are charged with accepting bribes in the millions of dollars.

Later in the day, Zurich cantonal police will hold hearings on the immediate extradition of the suspects to the United States.

According to the FOJ, if the Zurich police oppose extradition, Swiss authorities will ask the United States to submit a formal extradition request within the 40-day deadline.

According to The New York Times, Alfredo Hawit, the president of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), and Juan Angel Napout, the president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), are among those arrested.

In May, several high-ranking FIFA officials were arrested on a US federal corruption warrant.
