BELGRADE (Sputnik) — Kerry added, however, that he was referring mainly to the Syrian and Arab forces.
"I think we know that without the ability to find some ground forces that are prepared to take on Daesh, it would not be defeated from the air," Kerry said at the Ministerial Council conference of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
According to the US secretary of state, a political transition in Syria is vital for efficient anti-terrorist operation in the county.
"Part of the political strategy came into effect in Vienna process is geared towards trying to get a political transition in place. Because if we get a political transition in place, we power every nation and every entity to come together, the Syrian army together with the opposition, together with all the surrounding countries, together with Russian and the US to go and fight Daesh," Kerry pointed out.
A US-led international coalition has been conducting airstrikes against the IS, prohibited in Russia and many other countries, in Iraq and Syria since 2014 without the approval of the UN Security Council or the Syrian government. Russia launched its own air campaign against Daesh in Syria on September 30 at the request of Damascus.
