UK Court Authorizes Arrest of Former Russian Banker Pugachev
17:16 GMT 03.12.2015 (Updated: 18:01 GMT 03.12.2015) Former Russian banker and lawmaker Sergei Pugachev, who is accused of helping himself to over $2 billion from the bank, could be arrested in the United Kingdom, according to the decision of the High Court of Justice of England and Wales.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The High Court of Justice of England and Wales on Thursday issued an order for an immediate arrest of former Russian banker and lawmaker Sergei Pugachev, Russia's Deposit Insurance Agency (DIA) said in a statement.
The DIA, which acts as the liquidator of Pugachev’s former bank Mezhprombank, originally commenced proceedings against the ex-senator in Russia in December 2013 after he was accused of helping himself to over$2 billion from the bank. Civil proceedings were initiated against Pugachev in England in July 2014.
"The DIA will continue taking all necessary steps to implement the legal injunction demanding that Pugachev return 75.6 billion rubles [$1.1 billion at the current exchange rate] to the Mezhprombank creditors," the agency said.
Mezhprombank was declared bankrupt in November 2010 after failing to meet Central Bank requirements and repay creditors.
Pugachyov, 52, was ousted from the Russian parliament’s upper house in 2011, placed on Interpol's most-wanted list in 2014 and at the moment reportedly resides in France.
