Moscow Welcomes British Airstrikes Against Daesh in Syria - Kremlin
MOSCOW (Sputnik) The first UK airstrikes in Syria targeted an oilfield controlled by Daesh, also known as ISIL/The Islamic State jihadist group, British media reported Thursday.

Earlier in the day, four British Tornado jets left the Royal Air Force Akrotiri base in Cyprus after the country’s parliament on Wednesday voted to extend airstrikes against Daesh in Syria.

Sky News reported that the first target of the jets was an oilfield held by Daesh in eastern Syria.

The media outlet said that there were several pre-planned targets prepared if the vote for expanded UK airstrikes was affirmative.

The United Kingdom has been conducting airstrikes against Daesh positions in Iraq as part of a US-led coalition since September 2014.

Russia has been carrying out a separate aerial campaign against the extremist group, prohibited in Russia and a range of other countries, since September 30, at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
