Member states of the European Union remain reluctant to share intelligence in the face of a growing extremist threat in the bloc, European Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said Friday.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – The European Council approved a text on a draft regulation of the European Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation and Training (Europol) at a Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting on Friday.

"Information and intelligence sharing is a problem in Europe…All initiatives undertaken so far by the Commission hopefully will lead very soon to a better, based on mutual trust, exchange of intelligence and information," Avramopoulos told reporters.

The "political agreement" on the Europol regulation is subject to formal approval by the European Parliament.

Avramopoulos said in a tweet later that Europol had signed an exchange of information agreement with the external border protection agency Frontex.  In a press briefing, the commissioner emphasized the need to exchange information to ensure the safety of the citizens of all EU member states.
