"Frontex is grateful for the contributions, but more efforts are still needed," Frontex Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri was quoted as saying in a statement.
At present, Frontex has 477 officers in the Hellenic Republic, including 172 crew members of vessels patrolling Greek waters.
Frontex is also set to expand the scale of its work to Greece’s border with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, where it will help with the migrants’ registration. The deployment of additional officers is scheduled for next week, according to the statement.
Hundreds of thousands of refugees flee war-torn regions of the Middle East and North Africa to reach the European Union. Greece is used as one of the transit states en route to more wealthy EU countries.
