MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Georgia's president Giorgi Margvelashvili canceled his predecessor's citizenship by presidential decree N378 "On Citizenship," with the document subsequently published on the official presidential website.
The procedure to revoke Saakashvili's citizenship began in late October, with the Georgian Justice Ministry passing the resolution to Margvelashvili on Thursday. Saakashvili was notified of the ongoing proceedings on November 3, according to the ministry.
Mikheil Saakashvili served as Georgia's president between 2004 and 2013. Criminal charges were filed against him by the Georgian Prosecutor's Office in July 2014, for exceeding his powers as well as illegally seizing assets from businessman Badri Patarkatsishvili. Saakashvili left Georgia in 2013.
