WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US officials have handed over information to their Pakistani counterparts about links between Tashfeen Malik and the Red Mosque in Islamabad, the Daily Mail Online reported on Friday.
The mosque has long been known for its strong ties to violent Islamist extremists and the Pakistan government is now weighing whether to take action against its preacher, Maulana Abdul Aziz, after the disclosures by US officials, the report said.
US officials have already conducted crisis talks with Shahbaz Sharif, the brother of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, at Pakistan’s High Commission in London, the report added.
The Red Mosque achieved international notoriety in 2007, when it was at the center of a bloody siege as fundamentalists who clashed with security forces. Up to 1,000 people are believed to be killed in the clashes, the report noted.
