UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Fighting in South Sudan's Western Equatoria region has led more than 4,000 people to flee across the border into the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the UN's refugee agency (UNHCR) said in a statement on Friday.
"Recent fighting between local armed groups and the South Sudan army in the country's Western Equatoria region has forced over 4,000 people to flee into a remote corner of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)," according to the statement.
UNHCR estimates that the conflict in South Sudan has forced some 2.3 million people to flee their homes.
South Sudan has experienced nearly two years of ongoing violence between government forces and opposition rebel groups despite a number of ceasefire agreements being reached.
