The agency who is resettling the refugees, the International Rescue Committee, also filed separate paperwork at a US District Court, citing that Texas could not discriminate on the basis of nationality as it was a violation of US civil rights laws.
“Texas is not discriminating against all refugees, only Syrian refugees,” the International Rescue Committee said in its filing.
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is also suing the US government as well as the IRC in an attempt to block Syrian refugees from being housed in the state.
The state has also requested that nonprofit groups stop providing aid to refugees fleeing from the violence of Syria.
Since 2011, nearly 250 Syrian refugees have been resettled in the state, making Texas one of the largest relocation sites since the war began, Raw Story reported.
Despite withdrawing their request for a temporary restraining order on the resettlements, the state has requested a hearing on or before December 9 to express their remaining concerns.
