US Decides to Provide $24Mln Humanitarian Assistance to Refugees in Europe

The assistance will help refugees and migrants facing the onset of winter, especially in Greece, the Balkans, and other parts of Europe, the US Department of State said.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The UN High Commissioner for Refugees will receive humanitarian assistance worth $24 million for refugees and migrants arriving to Europe from war-torn regions, the US State Department announced in a press release on Friday.

“The United States today announced a contribution of nearly $24 million in new humanitarian assistance from the United States to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR),” the release said.

The State Department added that the assistance will allow to help refugees and migrants facing the onset of winter, especially in Greece, the Balkans, and other parts of Europe.

The UNHCR provides food, water, temporary shelter and establishes areas to process and screen arriving refugees.

The European Union is currently struggling to manage a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people fleeing conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
