Earlier in the day, an alleged gunman, 69, took hostage his former partner and an employee of the cafe in the town of Rye. The man and the hostages stayed inside the building for around eight hours.
According to the ABC corporation, the man, armed with two firearms, let the hostages go after the police negotiated with him.
"No-one's been injured which is a great result as far as we're concerned. The skill of the negotiators and our tactical operators has been shown to be successful… The circumstances appear to be a combination of a family dispute between the male and one of the females, as well as a relationship breakdown and a business breakdown involved the cafe as well," police superintendent Glenn Weir said, as quoted by the media outlet.
In December 2014, almost 20 people were taken hostage in a cafe in Sydney. Police stormed the building after a 16-hour siege. Three people were killed, including the perpetrator, a self-proclaimed Islamic cleric.
