WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States should pass stronger handgun purchasing license mandates in order to prevent future gun violence, advocacy group Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence national coordinator Vincent DeMarco told Sputnik.
“We need effective gun violence prevention laws all across the country, particularly handgun purchaser licensing,” DeMarco said on Friday.
On Wednesday, shooters opened fire at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California, killing 14 people. The mass shooting was the latest in a string of gun-related violence in the United States, prompting calls for stricter gun control laws. and other security measures
DeMarco noted strict gun control laws work to save lives.
“After Connecticut enacted such a law in 1994, gun homicides went down by 40 percent and after Missouri repealed such a law in 2007, gun deaths went up by 25 percent,” he pointed out.
The Second Amendment to the US Constitution guarantees the right of Americans to keep and bear arms.
