Poland’s desire to station US nuclear weapons as part of NATO’s “nuclear sharing” program, is making it a potential target of a retaliatory strike, a prominent Russian defense analyst warned on Saturday.

Is Poland Mulling Hosting NATO Nukes?
Poland’s deputy defense minister Tomasz Szatkowski said on Sunday that the ministry was currently discussing whether to ask for access to NATO's so-called "nuclear sharing" program, which involves non-nuclear states borrowing nuclear weapons from the United States.

Igor Korotchenko, the editor-in-chief of the National Defense journal, told RIA Novosti that the Poles should think twice before voting for politicians who make them hostage to their own ambitions.

“First of all, this is a violation of the Russia-NATO Founding Act which bans nuclear weapons on the territories of NATO member-states. And also of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty because in this case the Americans would hand then nuclear weapons over to the Polish military command which could eventually use them as part of joint military action,” Korotchenko said.

He also warned that the Americans would thus lose control of these weapons as the Polish military could now put these weapons to use at will.

“The Poles agreed to deploy US anti-missiles on their soil and now they want to station US nuclear weapons under their own control,” Korotchenko said, adding that  in this case the nuclear munitions and anti-missiles would become the prime targets of a Russian counterstrike.

“Such a retaliatory strike will come if the Poles allow themselves to be drawn into this adventure. They need to think hard before they vote for those whose suicidal policy takes the entire population hostage to their ambitions,” Igor Korotcheko said in conclusion.
