MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, Abadi hosted a delegation headed by German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Baghdad. The primary issue on the agenda was terrorism and ways to counter it, particularly, Daesh terrorist group, also known as ISIL or the Islamic State.
"[Abadi] added that Iraq is defeating Daesh gangs, and there is not any [need for a] foreign force to fight terrorism on Iraqi soil, and looked forward to more support from the international community in arming and training," the prime minister's office said in a statement.
Abadi said that terrorism was a threat, not only for the Middle East, but also for Europe, warning that "Germany is not far from this threat."
Iraq's largest province, Anbar, is largely controlled by Daesh, with the Iraqi army currently conducting a large-scale operation to liberate the region.
