Europe is 'Blind' if It Views Russia as the Enemy

European capitals have no grounds to view Russia as an adversary, well-known French historian Marc Ferro told Europe 1.

Moscow poses no threat to the West and Europe is blind if it thinks otherwise, he noted. "Our enemies are those who kill our soldiers in Mali and Syria, who carry out terrorist acts in France. Russians are not those people," Ferro emphasized.

France has been rocked by deadly terrorist acts in 2015, including an attack on the Charli Hebdo satirical magazine in January and a night of terror in Paris in November. January assaults across the Île-de-France region, specifically in the French capital, left 17 people dead, while the November 13 attacks in Paris claimed the lives of 130 people.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, considered the most active and deadliest of all al-Qaeda offshoots, claimed responsibility for the January terrorist acts. Daesh, also known as ISIL, said it was behind the November attacks.

Ferro also spoke about Crimea's reunification with Russia, saying that it was a reasonable move.

"What right do we have to judge [Vladimir Putin] since Russians make up three quarters of Crimea's population?" he asked.

The Black Sea peninsula rejoined Russia following a March 2014 referendum, which saw more than 96 percent of voters support the move.
