LEER (Sputnik) — The demonstrators were waving placards that read "Picket For Peace" and "No to War on Our Behalf." They used a loudspeaker to address guards posted at the entrance to the Bundeswehr facility, saying "We do not want another Afghanistan! No to the Bundeswehr mission in the Syrian operation!"
The German parliament voted last Friday to endorse the government’s proposal to carry out a non-combat support mission against the Islamic State (IS, or Daesh in Arabic) targets in Syria as part of an international operation. The German mission envisages the deployment of several Tornado reconnaissance aircraft, a frigate and 1,200 personnel.
A US-led coalition has been conducting airstrikes against Daesh, which is prohibited in Russia and many other countries, in Iraq and Syria since 2014 without the approval of the UN Security Council or the Syrian government.
