Greece is involved in the fight against terrorism, but will not deploy its troops, a source in the Greek Foreign Ministry said Monday.

ATHENS (Sputnik) – On December 3, Russian President Vladimir Putin called on the international community to create a united anti-terrorist effort, based on international law and acting under the auspices of the UN.

"Greece is already participating in the anti-terrorist front. We have not sent troops, but Greece is contributing to the alliance’s [US-led coalition] fight," the ministry source told RIA Novosti, commenting on Russia’s initiative.

Athens has repeatedly rejected propositions to participate in military operations against the Islamic State (IS, or Daesh in Arabic) in Syria.

The US-led coalition has been conducting airstrikes against Daesh positions in Syria and Iraq since 2014. In September 2015, Russia launched a separate aerial campaign against jihadist targets in Syria at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Daesh, a terrorist organization prohibited in Russia, is responsible for numerous atrocities, including the November 13 deadly attacks in Paris that left 130 people dead, and the Russian A321 airplane crash that killed all 224 people on board.
