WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US authorities are presently investigating nearly 1,000 cases of suspected homegrown terrorism, largely related to the Islamic State, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reports. The FBI has arrested approximately 70 individuals suspected of supporting the Islamic State.
“The overall uptick in extremist activity has made 2015 the single most active year for homegrown terror we have ever seen,” McCaul stated in a speech at the National Defense University.
McCaul noted that US law enforcement have identified 19 terror plots or successful attacks connected to the Islamic State, also known by its Arabic acronym Daesh.
“These [terror plots] included plans to murder tourists on Florida beaches, to set off pipe bombs on Capitol Hill, to detonate explosives at New York City landmarks and to livestream an attack at an American college campus,” McCaul explained.
