Nearly 300 people died and more than 550 were injured in two weeks as a result of a Taliban attack on the Afghan city of Kunduz, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) reported Saturday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The UNAMA pointed out that the "vast majority" of the casualties were due to fighting on the ground and could not be attributed exclusively to one party to the conflict.

According to the report, 289 people were killed and 559 sustained injuries between September 28 and October 13. The two weeks cover the Taliban’s attack on the provincial capital of Kunduz and temporary occupation of the city, as well as the Afghan government’s counter-offensive.

The estimated figures include 67 casualties of a Medecins sand Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders, or MSF) facility bombing by the United States that took place on October 3. A US AC-130 gunship aircraft shot 30mm cannon shells for 30 minutes into the MSF hospital in Kunduz, killing at least 30 medical staff and patients.

In 2015, Afghan military casualties reached the highest level since the war in the country between government forces and several militant groups began, hitting 4,000 in August, according to Pentagon.
